Lawrence Feinstein, PhD
Dr. Feinstein is a licensed clinical psychologist with licenses in California (PSY25675), Illinois (071-009052), and Florida (PY11748). He specializes in behavioral medicine and health psychology. His approach to treatment is

Dr. Feinstein received his PhD in health psychology from UCLA in 1988. He conducted
his doctoral dissertation research at the Diabetes Outpatient Training and
Education Center (DOTEC) at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, working
with patients with Type II diabetes, and their spouses. He also received
postdoctoral training in family therapy at the Department of Psychiatry at U.C.
Irvine Medical Center. Dr. Feinstein was first in private practice in 1991 in
Temecula CA (license PSY12025) where he co-founded and directed a health
education and behavioral health group practice center. The center featured the
HMR® Weight Loss and Health Management program (Health
Management Resources as one of several health education programs alongside a diabetes education program and support group that
won "Best Support Group of the Year" in 1993 from Riverside County American Diabetes Association.

In addition to private practice, Dr. Feinstein currently directs the intervention component of the
SafeUseNow program as VP of Clinical Programs for Principled Strategies, Inc. SafeUseNow℠ is a program
that identifies and stratifies prescribers by level of risk in prescribing controlled drugs (e.g., opioids), and
provides resources and education to prescribers to increase patient safety by improving patient safety.
Prior to his working at Principled Strategies, Dr. Feinstein served as VP and SVP of Product Development
at United Behavioral Health (Optum,
United Healthcare) in San Francisco. He contributed to the improvement of existing programs for depression management, post-bariatric surgery support, and co-morbid medical and behavioral conditions; and assisted in introducing new programs for autism and metabolic syndrome.
Before coming to UBH, Dr. Feinstein worked as a Solutions Director for Fair Isaac Corporation in San Diego and San Rafael (FICO).
At Fair Isaac, he expanded the healthcare division to offer advanced analytic services for pharmaceutical manufacturers, disease management companies, and hospitals. He led the initial efforts to
develop a patient Medication Adherence risk score to predict the risk of
non-adherence at the time a patient receives a new prescription. The product, now available from Fair Isaac, enables care managers to identify and preemptively intervene with patients who require
additional support to maintain adherence, one of the primary factors impacting health costs and clinical outcomes.
Dr. Feinstein served as a product manager and behavioral health managed care domain expert at
Askesis Development Group
(ADG), a software company that provides applications for managed care and
community mental health centers, and later served as VP of Products at
Hippocrates Gate (HG), a behavioral health software company in Pasadena CA. At
HG, he designed and managed the development of AccessHSI,
a software application that enables clinicians to rapidly record the clinical
status of patients in digital format, and generate a full narrative report with
suggested Level of Care based on current medical necessity guidelines of the
major managed care companies. The application enables providers and payers to
reduce by 80% the time spent on case reviews for authorization, and reduces
managed care denials received by provider facilities by 95%.
With his expertise in the areas of clinical psychology, program development and measurement,
transaction data and analytics, managed care, software, and business management,
Dr. Feinstein provides consultation services to payers and plans, provider
organizations, disease management companies, and behavioral health practice
groups and clinicians.
