Our Approach to Psychotherapy

We use two primary approaches to therapy: Cognitive Behavior Therapy or CBT, and Behavioral Analysis. A lot of information is available on the Internet about CBT in general (click here), and about how CBT is used to treat various conditions such as depression, anxiety, eating disorders, and insomnia. Both Dr. Feinstein and Dr. Mosk trained in the 1980s and 1990s with the pioneering clinical researches who created the field of CBT, and have had years of clinical and research experience using CBT methods and benefiting from the ongoing evolution in the field.

Within the field of Behavioral Analysis is a specialty called Applied Behavioral Analysis, also referred to as “ABA”. This type of treatment is most commonly known for its effectiveness with children and adults with Autism, Asperger’s Disease, and other Autism Spectrum Disorders. Click here to learn more about ABA. Behavioral Analysis is also very effective in helping patients to build health lifestyle behaviors into their daily activities, such as physical activity and medication adherence, switching to healthy low-calorie foods, and maintaining records.

Dr. Feinstein also provides services using Dialectical Behavior Therapy, or DBT (click here for information about DBT) in collaboration with other DBT clinicians. DBT is a variation of CBT that helps patients learn new skills including increasing self-acceptance, awareness of thoughts and behavior patterns (via record keeping), and tolerance for difficult emotions. Four of the primary skills areas emphasized in DBT are Mindfulness, Distress Tolerance, Emotion Regulation, and Interpersonal Effectiveness. Many DBT programs offer additional skills development.
